Christmas 2013

Hey, Merry Christmas. I say ‘merry’ at the beginning of every holiday now, because ‘happy’ is a feeling, but ‘merry’ is an attitude, like a higher level of happy. But everyone looks at me funny when I say “Merry Thanksgiving!” Or “Merry New Years!” So it’s nice having a holiday where you can say merry properly.
We’ve got a very big show for you today, first a video of me telling a winter–type story, perfect for all you displaced northerners, and then we have a bunch of pictures. Not a lot of text, because it’s all packed into the video! Almost a thousand words and the bonus of my face. You’re welcome. Merry Christmas. Merry Holidays too.

Mini–sode: The True Meaning Of Christmas

“What’cha thinkin’ about, Zachary?” Asked James Brown, Future mayor of Legopolis City, as they watched the frozen river flow by.
Dr. Smith sighed.  “I think there must be something wrong with me, James. Christmas is coming, but I’m not happy. I don’t feel the way I’m supposed to feel. I just don’t understand Christmas, I guess.”
James nodded,  he knew that feeling. “I know It‘s easy to get bogged down in all the commercialism and the crazy things people do this time of year, but you have to remember the true Meaning of christmas.”

“The True Meaning of Christmas?” Dr. Smith asked, he had never heard of christmas having a meaning before. “What is it?”
“Appeasing The Old Gods with a sacrifice so’s time keeps working and spring comes. Now, come on, lets go and get some hot cocoas and watch them light up the tree in the town square.”

James took his regular–sized friend by the shoulder and led him toward the lights.

CWA Mini–Sode: Thanksgiving

In a dimly–lit room, around a large wooden table were seated six people,
At the head of the table, Dr. Smith. Across from him at the other end Capt. Brown.
Scattered around the edges of the table; their parents.

“This looks great. Good job, Jeeves.” Dr. Smith said, “Can somebody pass me the lingonberry sauce and a drumstick?”
Mrs. Mary Brown, stout Iacobist, felt she could not restrain herself “Don’t you say a prayer of thanks to the almighty Iacobus1?”
“Well not usually because that’s a load of–” Was the sentence that Dr. Smith started but did not finish when he saw his mother’s eyes. He tried again. “But why don’t you lead us in one, Mrs. Brown.”
“Alright.” She replied. They bowed their heads.

“O Iacobus.
We honor your almightily grace on this, the holiest of several most holy days, with the sacrifice of thy most favoured bird so that thee may feast upon its delicious ghost flesh in thine devine dining room and thereby bless us with thine infinite majesty.
We thank thee for the sun and the rain, the summer and the winter, the rich harvests in our fields, we thank thee for our senses by which we hear the songs passed down by the saints in honor of thine holy spirit, and most especially for the presence of those gathered here.
Graciously accept this sacrifice as atonement for our many sins and grant our souls safe passage though the eight hells to stand at your divine side in the never–ending battle against the heathen devils who have not yet accepted thy devine grace.
Ahmen.”
They all chorused ‘Ahmen’ but Dr. Smith said it slightly more nervously. He’d never quite understood why Thanksgiving was a holiday, but a day to celebrate the things that you’re grateful for and eat a lot seemed like something he could get behind.
But now he knew the Turkey was a sacrificial offering to a bloodthirsty god.
He couldn’t help thinking maybe it would be a sound plan to not get on the bad side of these religious types.

During dinner Zachary Morton Smith {Dr. Smith’s Father} excitedly explained to everyone the minute intricacies of some boring mechanical thing, and when he had finished Capt. Brown told a hilariously inappropriate story everyone enjoyed, Mrs. Lisa Smith {Dr. Smith’s mother} tried not to say anything to anyone, and Mrs. Mary Brown {Capt. Brown’s mother} told everyone all about that adorable thing one of her many grand–children did at the last Brown family reunion.
 Morton turned to Mr. Brown
  “So Mr. Brown” he said
“Please,” cut in Mr. Brown “Call me Nino.”
“Alright, Nino. You can call me Morton. As I was saying what manner of business are you occupied in?”
“I used to sell water retention systems to the government.”
  “Which government would that be?”
“Any one that needed a dam.”
“Please dear,” Interrupted Mrs. Mary Brown “Let’s keep our language civil at the table.”
“I think it’s time for desert.” Declared Capt. Brown “If you’ll help me clear the table, gentlemen.”
The men lept up and clumsily co–ordinated the dishes to the kitchen, leaving Mrs. Mary Brown and Mrs. Lisa Smith alone at the table.

“That boy’s so sweet,” Mrs. Mary Brown said. “But he NEVER CALLS HIS MOTHER!” She shouted at the kitchen.
Mrs. Lisa Smith laughed. “Oh, so you’ve got one of those too?”
“Yes, but I can usually delude myself that he’s much too busy running a country. Your boy seems nice, and such a snappy dresser. What does he do?”
“He’s a doctor.”
“Ooh, Well our James could never be a doctor. No matter how happy it would make his old mother, he’s too dumb. What kind of doctor is your– ”
“Zachary.”
“Zachary. Is he a real doctor or…?”
“What do you mean ‘A Real Doctor’?”
“Well, you know. A Doctor of Medicine. As opposed to one of these scientist types.”
“What’s wrong with being a scientist?”
“Oh nothing dear. I’m sure they have their points. It’s just, it’s not the same is it. Real Doctors help people. ”

Mrs. Lisa Smith stared at this crazy person.
And decided to change the subject.
“So James, um, Did you adopt him or…?”
“No, we were just as surprised as you are when he turned out so tall.”
“Yeah you and your husband are both…and he’s like a hundred feet tall. ”
“Well. Iacobus works in mysterious ways.”
“Actually” said Dr. Smith, who had just walked in carrying a pie “It’s all to do with genetics. Dwarfism is a recessive gene and just because it’s present in both parents doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll manifest in the kid. It’s all a matter of odds. I’m more interested in his hair colour.”
“Whose hair colour?” Asked Capt. Brown, who was carrying another pie.
“Yours. See, your dad’s hair is black and your mom’s hair is red, by rights you should have red hair. Red hair’s one of the most dominant genes.”
“I get it from my Pop here, tell them Pop.”
Nino smiled from under his magnificent moustache.

“In the past,” he said “People didn’t used to have last names, they were named after the place they were from, with their middle name being “Son of [Father’s first name] But when last names came around people had to choose one. Some people just adapted thier old names, which is why you get a lot of ‘Jamesons’ Or ‘Johnsons’ or they adapted their occupation. Smith, for example.” Here he gestured to the gathered Smiths. “Or some dominant feature about them. Well, my people are italian, and they all had brown hair and worked in the sun all day which gave them a very brown complexion. So they chose Marronne, which means Brown. My grandfather anglicized it when he came to England.”
“Oh you’re english?” Questioned Morton.
“Yeah. We lived here for awhile a long time ago, actually. But then we moved back to England. We were going to move to Italy, where we have some family, but then the french took it over and we decided not to.”
“Well,” Said Morton “We live just north of you in Quagmireland. Where do you live, we should come visit you.”
“We live in an historical little town called Canterbury.”
Morton lit up. “Oh, you’re never going to believe this. Lisa, Lisa here is descended from the duke of Canterbury.”
Nino smiled. “Oh, so you’re an O’Callaghan, eh?” He said to Mrs. Lisa Smith. “You ever find out where the family fortune went?” as an aside he said to Morton “You, the guy was an eccentric. Disinherited his kids and left millions of dollars of gold to some mysterious person in his will.”
“So where’d it go?” Asked Mrs. Mary Brown.
Mrs. Lisa Smith got nervous. “It’s not polite to say.”
“Oh come on, we won’t tell anyone.” Needled Nino cheerfully.
It was obvious Mrs. Lisa Smith wasn’t going to say anything so Morton waved a dismissive hand at his wife and said “Oh, she’s very secretive about this but you’re alright people. He left it to us. Well, Lisa, specifically.”

The room got very quiet.

“Oh, look at the time. We’ll have to be getting back to our hotel, won’t we Nino?”
“Oh. Sure.”
“Thank you for having us, Dr. Smith. By the way, what sort of Doctor are you?”

Before Mrs. Lisa Smith Could jump in Dr. Smith replied “I have a medical degree and several PHD’s.”
“Well!” Mrs. Mary Brown was impressed, “I Real Doctor AND a scientist! You’ve got quite a catch here, James. Take care of him, Doctor Smith. Good bye everyone!”
Everyone said goodbye, and as they drove away Dr. Smith And Capt. Brown stood in the doorway, waving, occasionally.
After a fashion Capt. Brown Said “What did she mean, I have quite the catch here?”

1  There’s a certain subset of people in the Grand City of Legopolis who believe the world and all the things in it were created, all at once, exactly as they are, by an all powerful being by the name of Iacobus, latin for Jacob.
This is, of course, baloney. It took me forever and many iterations to get everything the way it is.

CWA Mini–Sode: Candidacy

“Hey Zachary! look at my new poster.”
Dr. Smith examined the poster;

“ ‘The People’s Candidate?’ You do know, James” He said “That the election is only a technicality, right? You wrote yourself into the constitution. You’re running for ‘Glorious Tyrant For Life’  You’re the only candidate.”

Capt. Brown was slightly crestfallen, “Of course I know, Zachary. But look, it’s my face on a poster.” His eyes sparkled like a child, “I ordered 100,000. You want to help me put them up around town?”
Capt. Brown delivered this proposal like he’d just scored the last two tickets to a prized concert, Dr. Smith had only one possible answer.

”Of course I’ll help you, James. I’ll get my stapler.”

CWA Mini–Sode: An Early Hallowe’en Costume

Dr. Smith fished a piece of machined steel out of his pants pocket, eyeballing it above the thing he was working on.  He shook his head and set it down on the table, it wasn’t going to fit.
Bip
Boop
Bonk

  “Sir?”
 “Yes, Jeeves?”

Dr. Smith picked the thing up and squinted at it; a solution presented itself.
“How do you like my hallowe’en costume?”

Dr. Smith smiled. “I see what you did there.”

CWA Mini–Sode: Dr. Smith Trolls the RSS

“What’cha typing, Zachary?” Asked Capt. Brown, whose patience had finally been worn down by Dr. Smith’s endless typing, the noise from which rung throughout the house.
“I’m writing a monograph for the RSS 1 on an aphid that feeds solely on the leaves of the rosa gallincanae and is only found in some parts of romania.” 2
“Is it an important bug?” Asked Capt. Brown,
“No.” Replied Dr. Smith. “But those cretins at the Royal Scientific Society won’t find that out until they’ve waded through over 600 pages of contradicting facts that nevertheless are completely true, philosophical conundrums where both outcomes are possible and valid and aggravatingly complete descriptions of things which bear no significance to anything, but sound like they do, written completely in obtuse terms and language that hasn’t meant what I’m saying for over a hundred years.”
“Geez,” Cap’t Brown Replied “What did they Do to you?”
  “The denied my application. Again.”
“Okay, I’m getting you out of the house.”
“Yeah, maybe that’a good idea.” Admitted Dr. Smith. He got up to go get his coat and hat.
Capt. Brown hung behind for a moment, possesed by curiosity.  He unwrapped the paper from the typewriter and started to read it.
He saw that it was page 422,3 but a paragraph later he dropped it like it was on fire due to the throbbing pain in his temples and the overwhelming existential despair which consumed him.

CWA Mini–sode: Gee, Thanks

“Gee. Thanks. Mom, and Dad.” Dr. Smith said, trying not to force his words. “A gold brick. Just what I wanted.”
“You’re welcome Son.” Said Morton, Obliviously pleased that his son had liked the gift. “You know, all this gold was just cluttering up the house.  I thought about paving the west gardens with it, but then I realised that’s a terrible idea. Because Gold’s so soft, right? You’d need some kind of hard brick for pavers.”
Capt. brown shook his gift.  It made no noise. “I wonder what I got.” He said.
“Oh, you got one too.” Said Mrs. Lisa Smith.
Capt. Brown tore open the package.
It was a rather used gold bar.
He could barely contain his grin.  He leaned over to Dr. Smith and Whispered Conspiratorially; “I love your family!”
 “Yeah.” Dr. Smith replied.
“Now. Son. What did you get me?” Asked Mrs. Lisa Smith.
Dr. Smith handed her a present, and she opened it. It was a very nice sweater.
“Gee. Thanks.” She said, forcing a smile. “Wherever did you–”
“I built a robot especially to knit it for you.”
“Oh. Thank you. That’s actually quite thoughtful.”
Capt. Brown watched the awkwardness with amazement.
“From now on I’m spending every christmas with you, Zachary.”

CWA Mini–sode: Merry Christmas From the Smiths

Merry Christmas!!
Well, It’s the end of the year, and what a year it’s been!
Morton’s kept up with his…hobbies that he has… And I’ve bought another chain of craft stores!
{We’re doing quite well, up another 15% since yesterday!} I’ve kept up with my investing and fiscal management, and in october I won the QuagmIreland Nat’l Money Award for Being Rich And Services to Poor People Who Aren’t Rich and Have No Money. {Very Prestigious!!! There was a pretty stature that I added to my collection of statues I’ve won.}
This year we [I] decided to spend The Holiday with our son, Zachary, who we hardly ever see because of how busy he is with his things.

This christmas he and his …friend… are living in a tent in the park.

He sends us telegrams sometimes {and by that I mean rarely} And I always got the impression he was doing quite well. He never explained why they were living in a tent {Together!!} in a park like the people my foundations throw money at.

Anyway, they had two trees, an eight foot one and a giant tree, all decorated with shiny baubles and things, very festive. But it was completely freezing out there, so Morton And I had to buy a hotel to sleep in for the night, as it was not a four person tent.

Everyone is having a great time {Except my son who appears to be homeless} and We are all looking forward to another great year!!!!

CWA Mini–sode: Shaking the Presents

Dr. Smith pressed his ear to the gift.
He shook it.
“You’ll never guess what it is, Zachary.”  Capt. Brown said, smiling.
“Well you’ll never guess what yours is.”  Dr. Smith replied, trying to pick up any hint of a fragrance.
“Lets see, if it had been a huge box I would have guessed it was something tiny, but since it’s a small box and you have the technology to put huge things in tiny boxes, I’d guess it’s something huge.”

Dr. Smith glared at him.

Capt. Brown grinned and flipped the record over.

CWA Mini-Sode: Worth it.

“It was definitely worth dragging all this stuff out here into the park, I think.” Capt. Brown said, Dr. Smith raised his glass in agreement.

CWA Mini–sode: Law Stand

“I would like some law, please.”

CWA Mini–sode: Merry Christmas Card Photos

~ Merry Christmas From Dr. Smith and Capt. Brown! ~

Capt. Brown tried to hold as still as possible as the timer counted down.

Tick tick tick…

“Why are you wearing that ridiculous hat, Zachary?” He finally asked.
“It’s my party hat,” Dr. Smith replied, “Now hold still, it should be going off any minute now.”

Tick tick tick…

Dr. Smith couldn’t stand it any longer. “Why are you wearing that ridiculous shirt, James?”

Tick tick tick…

“It’s my party shirt.”

CWA Mini–sode: Do Not open Till Xmas

“I HAVE AN AX NOW!” Capt. Brown yelled gleefully as he ran though the snow, waving the sharp ax wildly.
“Should I have waited until christmas to give you your present?” Dr. Smith wondered.

Capt. Brown couldn’t hear him over his own glee.

CWA Mini–sode: Lumberjack

Capt. Brown was pleased with himself, he had carried this tree all the way back.
One–handed.
“Look, Zachary!” He said, grinning, “I got us a christmas tree!”
Dr. Smith looked at it. “They didn’t have a bigger one?” He said, smiling slightly.
Capt. Brown was momentarially confused, “I couldn’t have lifted a bigger one—Oh, you’re joking. ’They’ didn’t have anything to do with it, anyway. I chopped this one down.”
Dr. Smith examined it, it seemed to be your standard pine, very christmassy, ideal. Then he noticed Capt. Brown’s shirt.
“Where did you get that shirt, James?”
“It was first prize. I won it. It’s 100% Wool Tartan.”
“It’s certainly bright. What was the contest?”
“Carving Woodland Animals out of Tree–Trunks with Chainsaws. I made the cutest moose you’ve ever seen.”
 “Let’s see it then.”
Capt. Brown fished a snapshot out of his pocket. “See?” He said, “It’s almost impossible to make legs if you don’t know the trick, no one else knew the trick. Detail work, that’s what sells these things.”
Dr. Smith examined the snapshot, it had been taken with an instant camera. The carving was in fact pretty cute. It was a little statue, carved of wood. He wondered how Capt. brown had made it with only a chainsaw, that seemed impossible. “Very skillful, James.” He said “I’m honestly impressed. But where is it?”
“They sold it.” Capt. Brown replied, “It was all for charity.” He added, in response to Dr. Smith’s questioning stare.
  “What was the charity?”
“It was a good charity, I thought they were doing some really great work.”
  “What was it?”
Capt. Brown seemed a little sheepish.  “Razors for Woodsmen.”  He said.

CWA Mini–sode: Automotive Repair

Dr. Smith watched the legs protruding from under his Jaguar.
“What’re you doing, James?”  He asked eventually.
“Fixin’ the Jag” Came the muffled voice of Capt. James Brown,  Mayor of the Grand City of Legopolis.
“James…” Dr. Smith said Carefully, “It wasn’t broken.”
“It was making a funny noise.”
“What makes you think you can fix a car, James?”
  “Zachary, I run a country. I think I can fix a car.”
“But those things aren’t even remotely similar–”
Dr. Smith had a terrible thought.
“James… Was the noise sort of like…Putt putt putt putt putt putt ROAR! Purrrrrrrrrr…?”
“Yes! Exactly like that. But I think I found the problem—”
“That’s… That’s the noise it’s supposed to make.”

CWA Mini–sode: Jeeves’ Day Off

  “Jeeves—” Dr. Smith started,
“No.” Replied Jeeves. “Today, Sir, is Sunday.”
“Is that what day it is? I wondered.”
“Yes, Sir. And Sunday is my Day Off.”
“Wait, you get a day off?”
  “I do.”
“But you’re a robot. What could you possibly do on your day off?”
“Interestingly, Sir, According to Page Six of ‘The Gentleman’s Gentleman’s Handbook’ [1856, Göedfreid, Niköløus, and Frank] Quote: ‘Hay Gentleman’s Gentleman need knot disclos the activitys of Hys Daye Of Reste to his Gentleman’s Gentleman’s Gentleman. Hys Daye Of Reste Is Hys Owne Tyme. ”
“You used the word gentleman five times in that sentence.”
“Proper Sentence Structure was not observed in 1856. Nor Standardised Spelling, although they almost universally enjoyed the letter Y.”
“They did. Alright, I guess. Go enjoy your mysterious Day Off.”
Jeeves turned to go.
“WAIT!” Dr. Smith called out, in a panic.
  “Yes, Sir?” Jeeves replied.
  “How will I feed myself?”
“That is a good question, Sir. I wish you luck, Good Day.”
