I too have problems with coasters. I want to know: are they sometimes just there for looks? Some tables will be ruined by water stains, but doesn't that mean that they just weren't finished properly?! What about in a restaurant when a table is coated with resin so you know it can't hurt? Is it socially unacceptable to just not use the coaster?
I don't think we make tables properly anymore. Because if they can be ruined by a bit of water, Come on. But the biggest problem I have is with the sidetable next to the couch {In the living room}, because the idea is to land your drink on this tiny raised square Without looking*.
